With a background in successfully transforming and leading a mass-market legacy brand, Susan Spencer brings deep authority, innovation and strategic thinking to clients and organizations. She is currently Senior Vice President, Content & Strategy, at Subject Matter+Kivvit, a strategic communications and advocacy firm in New York and Washington, DC.
Susan came to the firm after a long career in journalism and consulting. As president of Susan Spencer Consulting, Susan draws on her deep experience in content and communications to help organizations connect authentically with American women. Her clients include a nonprofit initiative promoting women’s economic security, a global content marketing agency, and a PR/communications firm in the health and wellness space.
A longtime media executive, Susan was most recently the editor in chief of Woman’s Day and womansday.com, owned by Hearst. During her eight-year tenure, she revitalized the magazine by connecting deeply with its audience of 15+ million and bringing it back to its roots as an inspirational source of information for American women. The magazine was the top-selling monthly on U.S. newsstands from 2016-2020.
As a volunteer, Susan sits on the board of WomenHeart, a Washington, DC, patient-centered nonprofit that serves women with heart disease. She also serves on two board committees: the Communications & Marketing Coordinating Committee of the American Heart Association and the Marketing Committee of Safe Horizon, the nation’s largest nonprofit victim services organization. Closer to home, she volunteers at St. Joseph’s Food Pantry in Maplewood, New Jersey.
